Taking a Stand Against Sexism | Dr. Sybil Barrett
What is sexism? According to Google, it is “prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.” Unfortunately, sexism has been around for thousands of years. Only very recently has it been given a word to define it. It is so common everywhere in the world and so rampant, it has become a part of society. Women have grown almost used to it, and most men can’t even recognize it or admit to its existence. Sexism isn’t confined to certain areas of life, and it is everywhere. It lies at the root of gender inequality.
All women have experienced sexism at some point in their life. Since childhood, women’s worth is compromised, belittled, or adjusted to make room for a man’s worth. The impact of sexism is extremely harmful, leaving women questioning their self-worth at every step of their life. Due to sexism, women have constantly struggled to achieve what they truly deserve. In some areas of the world, sexism has left young girls without access to basic education. In the past decades, women have strived harder to gain equal rights as men. They have been educating the masses through organizing and protesting against sexism, misogyny, and patriarchy.
In the U.S., the black woman is the most disrespected person. They are mistreated at the hands of not only sexism but blatant racism too. Author Dr. Sybil Barrett raises awareness of this in her upcoming book, Take Notes: Unapologetic Advice from an Experienced Woman. In the book, Dr. Barrett shares the struggles of women, especially black women, as they move through a society built to tear them down to the ground. She shares valuable advice honestly and truthfully. Women have suffered for centuries. They are still struggling to achieve equal rights in this time and era. There has been a progression in the past years. People are becoming aware of the mistreatment women face, and they are pointing it out, taking a stand against it, and changing societal norms. Dr. Sybil Barrett aims to help women take a strong stand for their rights and settle for nothing less than what they deserve!
